Cannabis in Canada

Cannabis became legal in Canada on October 17, 2018, when the Cannabis Act and its regulations came into force. The purpose of the act is to:

  • protect the health of youth by restricting access;
  • impose serious criminal penalties on people who break the law, especially those who import or export cannabis illegally, or provide cannabis to youth;
  • protect public health and safety by allowing adults access to legal cannabis.

While cannabis is legal in Canada, not all cannabis is legal.
