User guide and teacher resource
Objective
The Consider the Consequences of Vaping online learning module aims to provide youth aged 13-18 with information about vaping to help them make informed decisions about their health. It also helps and supports teachers in engaging with youth on the issue. This module includes informative content, engaging online activities, videos and Q&As. It covers a range of vaping-related topics, including:
- the harms and risks of youth vaping,
- the effects of nicotine and cannabis use during adolescence,
- legislation and regulations in Canada,
- environmental concerns,
- the financial cost of vaping,
- strategies to handle peer pressure,
- resources to help teens quit.
This user guide provides information to help you prepare to share the learning module in your classroom or in other community settings.
Intended presenter(s)
The online learning module is intended to be delivered by adults such as teachers, coaches, youth workers in community settings, and health professionals.
Note: The module has not been designed to replace school curriculum on the topics. We encourage you to take the time to explore each part and to assess if the content is appropriate for sharing with your specific audience.
About the module
The module is organized into four (4) key topic areas:
- Part 1: An introduction to teen vaping and its harms and risks. (10-15 mins)
- Part 2: Information on the health effects and environmental concerns of vaping nicotine and cannabis. (10-15 mins)
- Part 3: Insights into the financial cost of vaping, and tips on how to handle peer pressure. (10-15 mins)
- Part 4: Information on quitting vaping and tools to help teens quit. (15-20 mins)
Length and Format: The presentation will take approximately 45 minutes to an hour.
Things to Consider:
- The learning module can be shared with a class through a projector or smartboard. It can also be viewed individually on a computer, tablet or mobile phone.
- The module is narrated. Presenters do not need additional information to deliver the presentation.
- The module can be used in whole or in part, and can be split up over multiple sessions.
Set-up
Before beginning the presentation, please ensure you have the following:
- Access to a projector or smartboard and connection to a speaker system.
- Youth should have access to a computer, tablet or mobile phone.
- Access to the internet.
Teacher Resource
This resource outlines the content found in the learning module, including the narration and onscreen text so that teachers or presenters can familiarize themselves with the content before sharing it with youth.
It also outlines places where interactive elements appear throughout the module, including videos, activities and Q&As.
