Get the Facts provides students in grades 4 to 6 with important information about the impacts and risks associated with alcohol, cannabis, tobacco and vaping products. The program also provides strategies for handling peer pressure.

This free educational program comes with a teacher guide to make it easy for you to present the material. It also contains interactive elements to help keep your students engaged.

Substance

When we talk about a substance today, we mean alcohol, cannabis, tobacco and nicotine.

Substance Use

When we talk about substance use today, we mean people using alcohol, cannabis, tobacco or nicotine. This also includes smoking, vaping, eating or drinking it.

Addiction

Addiction is when someone has a strong desire to do something again and again in a way that is hard to stop.

Alcohol

Alcohol is a drug, in the form of a liquid, that can be found in drinks like beer and wine. It can change the way a person thinks and feels and can lead to feeling drunk.

Intoxication

Another word for the effects someone feels from a substance. For example, when someone is drunk, they are intoxicated.

Tobacco

Tobacco is a leaf from a plant, that contains a drug called nicotine, along with many other harmful chemicals. Tobacco is often smoked, usually in a cigarette.

Nicotine

Nicotine is a drug found in tobacco, cigarettes and vaping products. It is very addictive, which makes cigarettes and vaping products highly addictive.

Cannabis (“pot”, “weed”, etc.)

A plant that is a drug and has chemicals in it that can change the way a person thinks and feels. Most people use cannabis by smoking or vaping it.

Edible cannabis (“edibles”)

Edible cannabis, or edibles, are food products that have cannabis in them, such as candy, or chocolate. They can sometimes look like common candies or snacks you might eat at home.

Mental Health

Your feelings, thoughts, and emotions (such as happy, sad or nervous). Your mental health can be impacted by many different things in your life.

Stress

A feeling we get when we feel under pressure or overwhelmed.

Peer Pressure

When someone is trying to get you to do something you wouldn't normally do.
