About the Know More Opioids Awareness Program
How you can help your students learn more about opioids?
The Know More Opioids awareness program engages teens and young adults on the facts surrounding the overdose crisis, opioids, fentanyl, naloxone, and stigma. This free, interactive virtual experience features activities and resources designed to educate students on the risks associated with opioid use, how to reduce harms (e.g. knowing how to recognize and react to an opioid overdose) and the importance of reducing the stigma associated with addiction.
The opioid overdose crisis continues to affect the health and lives of many Canadians, their families, and our communities.
The facts are staggering:
• Since 2016, there have been over 30,843 opioid-related deaths.
• On average, 21 people died and 17 were hospitalized every day due to opioid-related harms in 2021.
• In 2021, 86% of opioid-related deaths involved fentanyl, a very strong opioid.
As students complete the online activities, they will be asked to answer questions to gauge their understanding of the information presented. Students can also submit questions anonymously to the virtual ambassador throughout the presentation.
Following the virtual experience, teachers will receive a summary of their students’ responses to the quiz questions, answers to questions received by the ambassadors and supplementary resources to support ongoing conversations. The virtual experience is for teens aged 13–18. The tour is offered in the official language of your choice and should take approximately 45 minutes to complete. A maximum of 50 students can participate at once in a virtual experience.
This hands-on virtual experience will be hosted via the platform of the school’s choice. Upon booking, teachers of each registered class will receive instructions for students to participate. The teacher and students will require access to a computer, tablet or any other mobile device with internet access; no downloads required. Accommodations can be made, if needed, to adapt the virtual experience to fit the technology available to your school and students (contact us to discuss).
